monk soap....for the ascetic

when monks work with their hands, as our fathers and the apostles did, then they are really monks - Rule of Saint Benedict   This soap is handmade by the monks of Saint Joseph Abbey.  The abbey was founded over 100 years ago in Saint Benedict, La.....just across the lake from NOLA. The monks of Saint Joseph are dedicated to prayer and service.  They bake over 2000 loaves of bread a week to be distributed to the poor.  The loaves of bread are broken and multiplied to serve  one million meals a year....reminds me of the fishes and loaves!  I might not believe every jot and tittle of their doctrine....but I totally agree with His Faith poured out on their hands.....a beautiful offering ......

And now they are making soap!!!  Monk soap scents are heavenly....Night Blooming Jasmine, Cucumber Mint, New Mown Hay and the list goes on.  So if you are feeling a little ascetic..... you can purchase Monk soap at About Face  .....

Vegetable SOUP is ON!!! .....fresh made

Yes...I am all about using paper plates...and would like to kiss the genius who invented them...but never mind...on to the recipe!

Select an eye of the round about 2lbs...you will only use a little less than a lb., so slice the other lb. for a later soup batch.  Yes, Ma'am you will be asked to make more!!!  Cut the eye of the round in bite size pieces and place in a 4qt. pot with 1 qt. beef broth on medium heat....I use Pacific Natural Foods beef broth...it is minimally processed and GOOD!! Let cook for 5 minutes and then begin adding the following.....2 stalks celery...2 cebollita onions....2 5.5oz cans of V8....

you then add....a couple of shakes of Worcestershire sauce and about 1TBL of olive oil (first cold press is the best) ......also add

1 elephant garlic clove chopped (you can find this garlic at a farmers market or sometimes it can be found at good ole Walmart)....my grandmothers were both born and raised in NOLA and they used Kitchen Bouquet for their soups and roux .....wow....could they cook!!!!  anyway....this is where you become a chef "au jus".....begin tasting....yes go ahead....I use Lawrey's salt....1 teaspoon of sugar(my grandmothers always used sugar in their soups)....coarse sea salt....ground pepper ....all to taste....oh yes and don't forget Tabasco....

Cook all the ingredients for 45 minutes...then, if I am in a hurry, I use 1 16oz package of Pictsweet Mixed Vegetables....carrots, corn, green beans, peas....or you can use any of your favorite vegetables.....

now...if you need extra liquid use a little more of the beef broth.....cover and cook on low for another hour....delicious with bread (NOLA people sop up the bottom of the bowl with the french bread....YUM!)  Bon Appetite!

A Silent Night....that changed the world....

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us......And from his fullness we have ALL received GRACE upon GRACE." John 1:14,16  ...so thankful....don't want to miss a moment of the LIFE FULLY LIVED......to all who happen to read this....may we all have our "eyes" fully open to "see" Immanuel (God with us)....and find ourselves giving a bit of "us" to others....

Confession of a fabric snob....

I am a fabric snob...ok there....I said it!  .....Shops that sell cool, modern, chic fabric....shops like CityCraft in Dallas or Purl Soho in New York.  But sometimes one just has to confess and admit that no matter where you find style..it is still STYLE!....Isn't confession good for the "fabric" of our souls?....so here goes.

Strolling down the aisle at "Walmarts" (that's what people call the "super giant" in East Texas), I spotted a display of plastic ("oil cloth") Christmas table cloths. So...here is what happened......I mean really it just happened.....

Three $4.88 table cloths  +  a free PurlSoho pattern =

A grocery tote....Perfect for that foodie Christmas gift!....a loaf of french bread, a bottle of your choice of drink, fruit, cheese, .....the list goes on and on....
This tote can be made in an hour....no really...just an hour!  A few suggestions if you decide to try this "Walmart classic".....use a walking foot, stitch length = 4....and use paper clips instead of pins....
And one last thing...thanks for not judging me....Merry! Merry!

traveled to the ancient town of San Gimignano, Italy....lounged at Guardastelle and was served the BEST EVER latte by an adorable little Italian lady, Roberta!

Eat. Play. Sleep.

I am quite liking this "Children at Play" quilt!  Measures.... 36 x 36....perfect for a baby....girl that is!.....Downloaded the letters from Moda Bake Shop....then I used Heat n' Bond and a straight stitch to adhere the letters to the cotton background....oh yes, did I tell you?...this is the back of the quilt.....and here's the front!!!

I used a Janome walking foot to quilt diagonally.  Painters tape is a great tool for keeping the lines straight. Don't sew on the tape....things get very weird if you do!

Anyway...next ....the pink polk-a-dot binding!...just a suggestion....Take a look at Barb Sackel's Binding tutorial. She is so easy to follow!  CONFESSION...this is only my third quilt....guess you could call this a new journey....keeps me out of trouble....a little creativity is good for the soul!!!  thanks for coming along!
